BuddyPress 1.7

BuddyPress 1.7 is at beta 2 RC1 stage and it looks good. The main changes are behind the scenes and work to enhance speed, performance, security and theme & bbPress integration. The biggest change is that BuddyPress has out-of-the-box theme integration so there's no requirement to install or buy a BP specific theme. Guess this means BuddyPress theme vendors will need to work a little bit harder for their money given all stylish themes will work with BP 1.7 without any template editing. BuddyPress 1.7 is backwards compatible with existing themes so currently customized themes will work … [Read more...]

Extra Repositories for Lucid Lynx

Lucid Lynx is Strutting her Stuff

Every six months a new version of the beloved Ubuntu Linux is released into the wild to bring both joy and frustration to its early adopters. This time we have the Long Term Support (LTS) version 10.04, Lucid Lynx, and she is gorgeous. Lucid's most joyful aspect is her new look gnome desktop and easy access to Ubuntu One, the free 2gb online storage facility offered to all of Lucid's adopters and her misery is the mass of files that need to be installed to make her sing and dance to her full multimedia potential - yes, I'm talking about the codecs and applications. Lucid Lynx might kick … [Read more...]

The Sun is shining, the day is bright, why not spend some time with some happy, smiley songs

Welcome to the second JournalXtra newsletter of the year where you will learn what's new, what's hot and what's not at JournalXtra. February was an incredibly busy month for me. News Update from JournalXtra – January

January Calendar Image

The first proper news update of the year. January has been a busy month for me not just with JournalXtra but also with the other sites on my network. I own and manage quite a large number of websites which lagged a little bit last year due to the work I put into JournalXtra. Getting a little annoyed, I decided to stand in front of a mirror and have a good talk with myself about how I should proceed this year. I can tell you that it was a funny site to watch me waving fists at myself as I argued the pros and cons of different management styles. The outcrop of my little self-confrontation is that … [Read more...]

Welcome to 2010

Welcome to 2010. Wasn't 2009 a hell of year? Come to think of it, wasn't the decade a bit of a fuck-up. I sincerely wish you a much better year and decade ahead. In fact, I know 2010 will be a good start to a fantastic decade; and I'm eagerly awaiting the discovery of a monolith on the moon - Arthur C. Clark predicted it so it must happen. And there's a point, where are the flying cars we were promised 20 years ago? O.K, o.k, Don't get on my back, I know we're 5 days into 2010 and this welcome note is a little late but I have been busily trundling away behind the scenes at JournalXtra … [Read more...]

A Little Bit of Linux Sanity

I've been using Linux for several years. My distro of choice is Kubuntu, the KDE environment version of Ubuntu. My relationship with Linux has had many good times and all the fun of the occasional arguments that beset all happy couples.  Yes, I'm a geek and love all things IT and technical; and as a geek whose survived the pitfalls of a Linux relationship I thought I'd offer some mediation for all those unhappy, less fortunate, Linux-Human couples. To be fair, most of my problems have been hardware related - sometimes she just needs a bit of TLC (with a hammer...); but it's the software and … [Read more...]
