Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis and Hustler publisher Larry Flynt reckon the porn industry is going flaccid because of the limp economy. They will be asking Congress for a for a $5 billion bailout in order to “invest in building new means of distribution, and shoring up our distribution right now to prevent further erosion from factors like Youporn and other Internet content that has seriously affected our business over the past few years,” Francis stated.
"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind," Flynt says. "It's time for Congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America."
Francis sees his industry like the big three automakers, only BIGGER: "Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation's most important businesses; we feel we deserve the same consideration." He said that if invited, he and Flynt would drive across the country in a hybrid vehicle to present their plans to Congress.
The press release noted that DVD sales and rentals for the adult industry have decreased by 22% in the past year, partially because people are turning more and more to the Internet for adult content.
"People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the press release. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."
Francis said, "The government is handing out money. You got $700 billion going to the financial industry, $30 or so billion going to automotive, hopefully we'll get $5 billion for porn."
They've already sent their proposal to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Congress.
